Packing used to be a very stressful time in our house and the bulk of the work fell to me. The chaos of getting everything that everyone needed into the suitcases and the constant worry that something was left behind was not a fun way to start a vacation.
Here are a few tips that have eased our packing woes:
- Have a separate set of toiletries for each family member
- Nothing is worse than trying to throw together toiletries at the last minute and realizing you don't have enough deodorant to make it through an entire trip, you can't find those hair ties you just HAVE to have and the band-aids you never need but refuse to travel without? Forget it...those are lost in the abyss of the hall closet.
- It is certainly worth the slight extra expense to gather up an extra set of travel toiletries and keep them neatly packed in a travel toiletry bag in your house. Deodorant, hair ties or bobby pins, face wash, moisturizer, shampoo, conditioner, band-aids, toothbrush, toothpaste, q-tips, etc. Keep in mind you'll most likely want these all in travel sized containers just incase your checked luggage goes over and you have to carry these items on.
- Keep everyone's toiletries in their own luggage. Looking for a toothbrush in 3 different suitcases at midnight in a hotel room isn't a good idea. Keep everyone's toiletries in their own bag so everyone knows where to find their stuff.
- Keep a list of the "must have" items for your various trips. If you're going to Walt Disney World you know you're going to need tennis shoes, you might also want to remember your character checklist, dining location notes, etc. Remember the things you couldn't live without on your previous trips and be sure to pack them for your upcoming trips.
- Make a list of what you packed before you leave and then adjust the list when you get home. Cross off items you didn't need and add items you had forgotten.
