Muppet Mania
During the post-Thanksgiving tryptophan overload, my family will be undoubtedly standing in-line for popcorn before settling in to the new Muppets movie.
My husband and I were debating the integrity of the new Muppet movie and how we thought it would compare to our Muppet favorites. It's important to debate these serious world issues over late morning coffee while watching "The Great Muppet Caper"; that's just how we roll on Saturday mornings!
While we adore Jason Segal and thought the Dracula Muppet musical in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" was nothing short of brilliant, the Muppets hold a dear place in our hearts. Entrusting the future of this franchise into a man known for his movies packed with adult comedy and content is enough to make anyone do a double take and wonder what they were thinking.
I must say, after reading the ABC Nightline article and hearing Jason Segal's point of view I'm more excited for this movie than I was before.
Who knew this funny grown up known for his off beat roles in R rated movies would have such an obsession with Muppets! Segal himself admits, "I think that first there was a fear that I was going to it with a sense of irony. But I think very quickly they saw that it doesn't take long talking to me to see that I truly love the Muppets in a very pure way."
In "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", Segal wrote a Dracula muppet musical that gave us a taste into his borderline-delusional love of muppets. He kept those muppets as well as a collection he purchased from Jim Henson's daughter and cherished them long before the new Muppet movie came to fruition.
An estimated $50 million was put into Segals Muppet obsessed hands to make the new film, which debuts November 23rd.
Segal shows his softer loving Muppet side and admits "I'm not embarrassed to say I cried, They brought Kermit out of his box...and all of a sudden Steve Whitmire's hand went inside Kermit and it was alive and then he said the first line I had written for him--and I started crying. They had to stop for, like, a couple minutes while a 28-year old, at the time, grown man tried not cry hysterically."
While we appreciate Segal's quick wit and off color grown up humor, don't expect any of that to creep into the new Muppet movie. Segal states, "All of their jokes are good-natured and pure and kind. I like to think that part of what's so magical about the Muppets is that they remind us of the best version of ourselves."
We couldn't agree more, bring on the Muppets!
