More Than A Cookie...Gingerbread at Walt Disney World

Ahh, I love the smells of the season. Meat is roasting, cinnamon is baking and the unmistakable smell of gingerbread fills the air.

The gingerbread decorations at Walt Disney World have become quite famous. If you are spending the holidays at the Disney parks be sure to stop in to the deluxe resorts and take a peek at what the chef's can do with your favorite holiday cookie.

The grandest is, of course, at the Grand Floridian. This enormous Gingerbread House has been featured on television over the years and is so large there is a shop inside of the house. Cast Members are inside selling gingerbread in all shapes and sizes (cookies, "shingles", Mickey Ears, etc.) as well as chocolates, truffles and lollipops.

The Gingerbread House has just a few more ingredients than you are used to working with. Even though it may feel like you've literally made a ton of cookies, the chefs at Grand Floridian actually have.

The Gingerbread House requires:
  • 1,050 lbs of honey
  • 800 lbs of flour
  • 600 lbs of chocolate
  • 140 pints of egg whites
  • 35 lbs of spices
It takes the cast 840 hours of labor to produce, cut and bake the 5,089 "shingles" used to create the Gingerbread House.

Be sure to stop by the lobby of the Grand Floridian for photos and samples of this delectable creation. The other deluxe resorts have "food features" as well:

Yacht and Beach Club features a chocolate carousel that actually works!

Contemporary Resort has a more "modern" Gingerbread decor that can be seen along the wall below the monorail platform.

Each resort is decorated and has it's own Christmas tree as well so be sure to take a peek throughout the resorts for plenty of holiday cheer!
