First of all the "world" is now serving "nuggets" instead of chicken fingers which I find repulsive. If I can't immediately identify it as meat, I'm not eating it. We've all seen "Super-Size Me" and I have no interest in mystery meat. When you think of the quick service dining plan at Walt Disney World you immediately start dreading the week long rendezvous with burgers and fries. On the other hand, Disneyland really does it right with a diverse set of options and plenty of fresh foods and healthy options.
The quality of the quick service at Disneyland is outstanding, there are options ranging from things as American as sandwiches and chicken fingers to Mexican, Chinese and soups in sourdough bread bowls. My husband and I recently discovered the Hungry Bear restaurant in Critter Country. Yep, we ate in a land with the word Critter in it and it was surprisingly delicious!
I'm a big fan of the turkey sandwich and even being the incredibly picky eater that I am this sandwich exceeded my expectations.
The honey oat bread was the perfect soft bread with just a tiny bit of sweetness that brought out the flavor in the turkey. The turkey was certainly not lacking in quality or quantity. I usually take one side of the bread off to be able to actually get a bite of the sandwich because it's stacked so high. I'd love to say it's because I'm a healthy eater and I'm watching the carbs but it's kind of hard to pull that story off when there is a heaping pile of delicious sweet potato fries on the plate!
My husband discovered the fried green tomato sandwich and it was gone before I even glanced up to ask how it was, I'd say he enjoyed it! It's a nice option for vegetarians as well (which he is not). There is a spicy slaw served on the sandwich, which is made on the same honey oat bread.
There is outdoor seating only at the Hungry Bear but the majority of it is covered and you get a view of the water where Tom Sawyer Island lies. We haven't had a problem finding a seat but we tend to eat at odd times anyway. There is more space than you would think and many levels of seating so don't get discouraged if you don't see a table at first glance.
The Hungry Bear is a rustic gem of a dining hideaway in Critter Country, don't miss it during your next visit!
