Disney Cruise Line empowers kids with a "keep out" policy for adults in their kid and teen areas and we're more than happy to leave our children in their capable hands with an endless supply of activities; supervised by cool people...not parents.
What about the other side of the coin? What about the grown ups? Yep...we have our own spots too and ours are pretty darn cool as well! People always think I'm crazy when I choose Disney Cruise Line even when I'm traveling without kids. They have this image of a floating vessel that's over run by screaming children in various ages and I'll admit I had the same fear before our first Disney Cruise.
We've all been on that family vacation in the parks in the dead of the summer when kids are arguing, the sun is sweltering and you want to jump in the lagoon just to escape and get a moment's peace and quiet. You don't dare leave your children unattended, tempting as it may be, so unless you check them into one of the supervised kids programs at the resorts you're stuck with them all day and all night. As wonderful and magical as that family togetherness is, sometimes you want a little time for yourself, where no one is hungry, thirsty, tired, hyper or bored. A place where your attention isn't on full demand and you could actually read a book or close your eyes for a moment without worrying something catastrophic will happen. Welcome to paradise aboard your Disney themed floating vessel...adults only!
- The Spas: The Senses Spa on the Dream and Fantasy and the Vista Spa on the Magic and Wonder are an adults only oasis. While the Senses spa does offer a teens only area they will be kept separate and the overall ambiance of the spa environment doesn't lend itself to rowdy teenagers, so you're safe. The rainforest room offers the best seats in the house, mosaic tile chairs that are heated, themed exotic shower experiences and steam hot enough to cleanse even the worst toxins. There are plenty of treatments to choose from as well as a fitness center that's strictly 18 and older.
- The Pool-The pool for the tiny tots looks like Mickey, the regular kids pool features either Goofy or Donald and the adult pool features...peace, quiet and a bar. You can dangle your feet from a bar stool into the water below on the Dream and the Fantasy or have a drink pool side on the Wonder or Magic. Look for the drink of the day special or get beer by the bucket to save a few bucks. The pool area is blissfully quiet and the chair covers are plush and have removable pillows. Every now and then you'll be serenaded by acoustic live music or an occasional game (there is no forced participation, usually a reward and they don't last long). Best of all there are no swim diapers or water-wings and no kids are allowed.
- The Restaurants-There's nothing like a little bit of family togetherness and there's nothing as sweet or tasty as an evening out on a Disney ship. Each ship features Palo, a Northern Italian inspired adults only dining experience. This restaurant is strictly adults only and is far removed from any of the noise or hustle and bustle of the main dining rooms. The staff here is highly trained to give you the best dining experience possible and the food is out of this world. The Dream and Fantasy feature Remy, a fine French dining experience that is truly one of a kind.
- Adults only entertainment-Each ship features an adults only district with nightly entertainment. Caberet performances will be held periodically during your cruise (an adults only version of a show by whatever act is on-board at the moment) game shows, dancing, karaoke and a hilarious "pub skit" the last night of the cruise (don't miss this!). Various lounges offer specialty cocktails, champagne and live entertainment. Don't worry about being immersed in a "club scene" the adults only areas are very Disney-esque and the scene is clean. Alcohol is available for purchase but beyond that it's a place for good clean fun (kid-free).
- The Cove-Near the adults only pool area you'll find The Cove, a cozy coffee bar with specialty coffee drinks available for purchase. You'll also find a liquor selection perfect for a night cap and various snacks throughout the day (snacks are complimentary, liquor is not). Be sure to pick up a Cove Card and receive a punch every time you purchase a beverage and when your card fills up you get a coffee free! Coffee here is fresh brewed and they serve espresso. You'll find a selection of Magazines in plastic covers (great for poolside) as well as books to borrow during your cruise.
