Disney Water Parks: Typhoon Lagoon

Nothing says summer like a day at the water park and in this brutally cold weather that most the U.S. is experiencing makes for great summer day dreaming.

The water parks were something I experienced later in my Disney vacation travels. As a family we never went there, as a teenager my friend and I went to Blizzard Beach for my first time. Being the daredevil she was, she was determined to make me, the fraidy cat experience everything. Blizzard Beach was my first water park experience and I won't lie and tell you I wasn't terrified.

When my own family began our Disney vacations we waited until my step-son was tall enough to ride the big slides, because we knew there was no way the little kiddie areas would hold his attention when all the other attractions were high in the sky. Instead of battling a meltdown we opted to just wait it out until the little squirt grew tall enough.

There are two Disney water parks but they are both very different, of course each has a theme, they are Disney after all! Which one you'll prefer is a personal preference based on your opinion of the theme and the attractions.

Typhoon Lagoon was the first Disney water park to open. To me this park is an ode to River Country, the first Disney "water park" that was nestled on the shores of Bay Lake from 1976 to 2001. There is a rustic sort of feeling here and the big story is Typhoon Tilly, the little shrimp boat who was thrown on top of Mount Mayday during a Typhoon.

The most popular feature of Typhoon Lagoon is the wave pool, which happens to be the worlds largest  outdoor wave pool. The waves continue throughout the day, be sure to check the posted signs to find out when "high tide" will be or when you can experience more docile waves if you aren't quite ready to ride the wave, literally!

A lazy river provides guests with tubes to float around and well...be lazy! There is nothing more relaxing than the lazy river after a long day of exciting water slides. Ketchakiddee Creek offers a watery play area for the little one's to enjoy while the bigger family members enjoy the water coaster type watersides like Crush n' Cusher, body slides and raft rides.

Sandy areas have chairs in the sun and shade but they are limited by space, so arrive early if you want to set up camp for the day.

During peak season in the summer the water parks fill to capacity quickly, sometimes before noon. For safety purposes guests will be asked to either wait near the gates or return at a later time to gain access to the park if capacity is reached.

I find it best to get to the water parks first thing in the morning, preferably during Extra Magical Hours to beat the heat and the crowds. Be mindful of the hot Florida summer sun and bring plenty of sunscreen and stay hydrated! Hit the biggest slides and most popular attractions first before the crowds increase during the day.

Have a splash!
