Liberty Tree Tavern has long been a family favorite of ours. It’s one of those meals that makes you feel like everyday is Thanksgiving, but someone else does all the work and all the cooking and you don’t have to fight over the couch to watch football after you’re done eating.
As a sweet tooth and apple lover, I always found the “apple cobbler” at Liberty Tree to be a bit of a letdown after such a good meal. They syrup in the apples didn’t taste natural and by the time it got to the table the ice cream was like soup.
My last visit to Liberty Tree had me practically dancing with glee when the Johnny Appleseed Cake appeared for dessert. Be still my heart at the homemade white cake filled with apples, Craisins, and Dried Cranberries.
Anything with the word “cake” has already stollen my heart before I even taste it but white cake usually leaves my cake fetish un-satisfied. Johnny Appleseed won’t let you down. The apples and dried fruits in the cake give it a robust sweet and sour flavor and the “plain”ness is the perfect balance to the fruit.
The ratio of cake-fruit-ice cream is perfect. The fruit brings the cake to life without the flavors being overbearing and fighting for control of your taste buds, the ice cream is still in its intended form when it arrives at the table, and the consistency of the circular mini cakes makes it easy to stake your claim on the family style dessert.
I hope this is one item that stays on the menu for a very long time!
